- Engines ranging from 400 to 500 in size with horsepower outputs of 400 to 500+ use a range of pipes from 3.5 to 4.5 inches.
Cars designed for racing often use straight pipe exhaust systems to improve the performance of the engine. The muffler is removed to enhance performance. Tips can change the appearance or sound of the exhaust pipes on your car, such as creating a turbo sound. To ensure the tip fits, measure across the end of the pipe. Include the rims, or outer edges. The most common sizes for cars and trucks are 2.25, 2.5 and 3 inches in diameter. Purchase a tip with an inlet size that is the same diameter as your exhaust pipe.
