Mercury Grand Marquis Locks and Hardware

Locks and Hardware for Mercury Grand Marquis are vital components for the safety of your vehicle. These mechanisms provide safety and security for you, your Grand Marquis, your passengers, and anything stored inside the car. Its important to recognize signs of failure in case you need to replace any of this hardware.

What are the parts in Grand Marquis lock?

The locks on your Mercury vehicle may be somewhat different depending on which door or component is using the lock. Door locks for the Marquis car are mounted inside metal cylinders. These parts are machined to match the teeth of your Mercurys key precisely. Power door locks, like those in the Mercury Grand Marquis LS model, contain a piece called an actuator. A rod connects the actuator to the Marquiss door latch which allows the device to move the latch upwards. In this way, the actuator connects the exterior door handle of the vehicle to the locking hardware, allowing you to open the door. Locks for other parts of your Mercury Grand Marquis hardware, such as the trunk, will function similarly, with a latch holding the lid in place until you need to open it.

Although the actuator is one of the most important pieces of hardware in any Grand Marquis lock, there are others you may wish to purchase separately. Some of these pieces of hardware include:

  • Body controller: This component supplies the power your Mercurys actuator needs to function.
  • Latch striker: The latch striker extends from the locking cylinder into a strike plate in your Grand Marquiss door to keep it closed.
  • Control retainer clips: These hold the locking mechanism inside its proper housing. These can chip or break off and may need replacement separately.
What locks are there for the Mercury Grand Marquis?

The two main types of vehicle locks include mechanical and automatic locks. Both of these categories contain slight variations as to how the Mercury Grand Marquis locks and hardware achieves its primary purpose.

  • Mechanical locks: These include pin or wafer tumblers. These locking systems are housed in cylinders. This means you can purchase and replace individual hardware if one or more locks are experiencing failure.
  • Automatic locks: These use electricity to automatically lock or unlock your car doors when you push a button. Some Grand Marquis models let you unlock the automatic locks from a distance as well.
How do you replace Mercury Grand Marquis locks?

Because the locking mechanisms on your Mercury Grand Marquis LS sedan have mechanical parts, they will experience wear and tear over time. This is especially true of the drivers side door, which is bound to see plenty of use in your sedan. Once youve purchased new locks and additional hardware for your Mercury, you can follow these simple steps to install them.

  • Take off the armrests and remove the door panel to gain access to the old lock.
  • Disconnect the locking rod and remove the bolts so you can take out the handle.
  • Release the snap ring to remove the old lock, then slide any new locks into place. Replace the snap rings on the sedans doors to hold the new locks.
  • Reinsert the exterior door handles of your sedan, followed by the interior handles.
