Create Compatible Connections with DVI-D to HDMI Cables

With a DVI male to HDMI male audio-video cable, you can connect your Blu-Ray player to your analog TV or monitor. Watch all your favorite movies and TV programs and view family videos and photos in high-definition. Also connect your computer to your HDTV monitor and plug in your gaming consoles, cable boxes, projectors, DVD players, and more.

What is a DVI to HDMI cable?

DVI-D is a means of technology that provides a high-performance connection between different devices. The DVI to HDMI cable allows you to plug in high-definition electronics into devices that only have a dual link DVI port. It allows you to do things like plug in a Blu-Ray player into a previous model of TV that does not have an HD connection. You also might want to use your computer as your hub for all your digital and analog electronics and send video from them to your TV monitor.

What types of DVI cables would connect your electronic devices?

The kind you need depends on whether or not you intend to run an analog or digital device, and this also determines the need for an HDMI male or female adapter. Many TVs, DVD players, and gaming consoles before high-definition became standard are analog, but now you might have entertainment devices that produce high-definition digital images. You typically have four choices of DVI-D cables, and three of these types do provide HDMI support:

  • DVI-A - You can use this type to create a connection between a variety of analog devices including a computer to a TV monitor and some projector models. This one does not send a digital signal and typically is not used for HDMI connections.
  • DVI-D - This type sends a video signal to your TV monitor from compatible electronic devices you plug into it. It is not one you can use with a DVI-A connection, but it is digital and could provide you HDMI support.
  • DVI-I - You can use this DVI cable to carry either a digital or analog signal to the devices you have connected to it. It gives you flexibility of plugging in both analog and digital devices.
  • DisplayPort - This is a specific type of connector that sends video from a source such as a DVD player or a computer to a TV monitor. It also carries USB data and audio data and is often used to replace a VGA, DVI, and FPD-Link connection.
  • Single or dual link DVI - These are two subcategories of DVI-D cables. The single link provides support for graphics resolutions at about 1920 by 1200, and the dual link cords provide support for resolutions at about 2560 by 1600.
Will an analog cable work with a high-definition device?

Some HD screens and monitors have HDMI and analog inputs to accommodate older devices. However, the result may have a lower resolution that what the monitor or screen is capable of.
