A Definitive Guide to the Dell Optiplex Hard Drive Caddy
The Optiplex, which is Dell's large high-performing line of desktops, includes a great deal of customizability for those that like to tweak their computer setup. For this reason, Dell included their Dell Optiplex hard drive caddy so that customizers can quickly slide their hard drives in and out of the case's housing. When you purchase a higher-capacity drive, you can simply purchase a new drive caddy from eBay and slide the new drive into its new home.
How do you place a drive into a drive caddy? While there are a few different models of the Dell hard drive caddy, the process of loading one up with a hard drive is pretty simple. In most cases, you can simply screw the 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch drive into the blue body of the caddy like you would the 3.5-inch mounting bay. Once it's in the caddy, you can attach the IDE or SATA connectors and their associated power cables.
How does the hard drive caddy lock into place? These devices are very simple to use and can save you a lot of time because they will remain firmly locked into the mounting bay until you need to remove them. In many cases, there are two tabs that you will simply need to pinch to release the locking mechanism, which is on the side of the Dell hard drive caddy. Additionally, locking the caddy into place also only requires that you push the caddy firmly into the tray. When it clicks, it's locked firmly in place.
Why would you need a hard drive caddy? There are several reasons to purchase a product like this. These may include:
- If you need to switch out drives from time to time: If you work in video editing or are a photographer, sometimes you will need to remove your drive so that you can take it with you. One of these trays makes this process simpler.
- If you have a smaller drive: In most cases, Dell Optiplex computers have room for 3.5-inch drives. If you happen to have a 2.5-inch SDD drive, then you'll need a caddy sled to help the smaller drive fit this area.
- If you need a layer of protection: Hard drive caddies are very durable and can protect a hard drive from a tumble that could damage the platter.
- If you want to avoid hassle: Some models of this product don_x001A_t require a screwdriver at all _x001A_ they simply have pegs that stay in place using tension, which makes installation simple.
