Choosing an Ethernet Network Card

The Internet is a vital part of our new work and home life. Because of that, you want to make sure your Internet is working. You can do this with an Ethernet network card.

What is an Ethernet Network Card?

  • An Ethernet network card works as a network adapter for your computer.
  • Accessing the Internet or joining a network means you'll need a network adapter like a network card.
  • Most computers now have both adapters for Ethernet cables as well as Wi-Fi capabilities. While many of us now use Wi-Fi, most companies prefer to also have adapters for Ethernet connectors as well.
  • While most Ethernet cards have speeds of 100 Mbps, many Ethernet cards are pushing into the gigabit territory to offer their customers higher Internet speed.
  • One Gbps is 1000 Mbps, so a network adapter with a speed of 1 Gbps is quite a bit faster than a normal 100 Mbps network adapter.

What Kinds of Ethernet Network Cards Are There?

  • There are several kinds of network cards for different connections, including LAN, PCI, and PCI Express.
  • PCI and PCI Express are also known as CardBuses, that can hold several cards at a time.
  • Most Ethernet network cards can be grouped into different connections.
    • Fast Ethernet is the standard 100 Mbps connection. They use different fiber optic cables that connect the Ethernet cord to either LAN connectors or PCI connectors.

How Can I Test an Ethernet Network Card to See if It's Working?

If you have a new network adapter or card, you'll want to test to see if it's working.

  • Open the control panel on your computer
  • Open the device manager. In most Windows PCs, this will be under Hardware and Sound.
  • Select the Network Adapters option to see all of your network devices.
  • You should be able to see only one Network Adapter on the list. Double click on this option to see the properties.
  • It should give you a summary under the General tab on the properties. In this summary, it should say if the device is working.
  • To make sure it's really working, click the Resources tab in the Properties box.
  • There should be an option that lists conflicting devices. If everything is working properly, then there should be no conflicting devices.
  • At this point, you can close the Properties box and keep working.
