Buying a DVD-RW Internal Laptop Drive

A DVD-RW drive allows you to not only use your laptop to watch DVDs, but the RW part means that the optical drive accepts and creates rewritable DVDs, which means that you can record or \"burn\" content onto the discs and then view it. There are some things you need to know, however, about purchasing a DVD burner for your Lenovo laptop.

How Do You Choose the Right Drive?

There are several considerations to make when you're looking for the right internal drive for your laptop computer. You'll want to keep some of the more important ones in mind as you browse for the most compatible component for your PC laptop.

  • Check the model number. Your computer has a model number that's most likely located on the bottom of your machine or on any literature that came with it.
  • Ensure that the series matches. For instance, when you have a ThinkPad or an IdeaPad, you'll want to verify that the drive you purchase matches up with those specific series.
  • Check out which interface your computer is compatible with. You may have a serial ATA (SATA) interface, an eSATA, or an IDE/PATA interface, and everything has to match up for it to fit properly.

What Can You Do with an Optical Drive?

You might wonder whether a DVD-ROM or rewriter is really necessary because what can you do with one, anyway? In reality, there are a few things that you can do with your drive that may make purchasing one a bit more exciting for you.

  • You can copy data onto a DVD, such as photos and videos. This is a good way to back up your memories or make copies of pictures for grandparents and family members.
  • Put data such as work projects, spreadsheets, or presentations on a disc.
  • You can copy other discs that already have information on them to a blank disc.

What Do You Need to Install a DVD Drive?

It's a fairly basic process to replace a broken burner, as you'll only need a handful of tools and some free time. You may also want to have a small bowl or container on hand to keep the small screws contained, so you don't lose any as you work.

  • You'll need a Phillips #2 screwdriver. This is what you'll use to loosen and remove the screws on the bottom housing of your laptop.
  • Next, remove the panel to see where the optical drive is located, and then gently remove it using the screwdriver. You can then use a flathead screwdriver to push the tab that's securing the drive so you can remove it.
  • At this point, you can pull out the existing burner and replace it with the new one. To put everything back together, you'll just need to reverse the steps and make sure that all of the parts are put together as they were.
