Ford E-150 Locks and Hardware

The Ford E-150 is a type of large passenger or transit car, and it was first released in 1960 for the 1961 selling season. Also called the Ford Club Wagon and the Ford Econoline, it features lots of cargo space and a powerful engine. Ford and other companies make all the locks and hardware you need for your vehicle.

How many parts make up the Ford Econolines lock?

You might think that Ford E-150 locks and hardware consist of only a few different parts. The Ford E-150 actually uses multiple parts that you may need to replace, including:

  • Lock cylinder: The lock cylinder is a piece of metal that has a slot on one end. This is the end that you insert your key into. The opposite end functions like a plug.
  • Handle: If you have problems opening your door, it may be an issue with the handle. Ford handles come in different styles and colors to match the interior of the Ford E-150.
  • Latch: Ford Econoline models have a latch inside the door that responds when you unlock the door. This latch is what alerts the Fords lock that you used a key and what allows the door to open.
  • Lock mechanism: The Ford E-150 will have either a manual lock mechanism or a lock switch. A manual lock mechanism puts the lock on top of the door. You can push it down or lift it up to lock and unlock the door.
  • Lock switch: Some Econoline cargo vehicles use an electronic lock switch. You can use the button on the switch to lock and unlock all the vehicles doors.
Can you use the same locks on all E-150 doors?

Though you can use the same locks on all your Ford E-150 doors, those doors need different hardware and parts. The cargo door on the back has a different type of latch and a locking mechanism inside. Both the driver’s side and passengers’ side doors on the Econoline use different hardware, too. Your rear door may have a latch that controls both doors. This latch lets you unlock one side of the Ford, but open both doors.

Do all locks work with all Ford E-150 models?

Ford made the E-150 line for more than 40 years. Not all parts designed for all models are compatible with others. You should find out what generation you have and what parts work with that generation. The Econoline generations are as follows:

  • First Generation: 1961 to 1967
  • Second Generation: 1968 to 1974
  • Third Generation: 1975 to 1991
  • Fourth Generation: 1992 to 2014
Who makes Econoline locks and hardware?

Locks and hardware for the Ford E-150 are available from a number of different companies. You may want to look for original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, replacements that Ford itself makes for the Econoline. Motorcraft, Standard Moto Parts, Dorman, and Airtex make replacement hardware for the Ford vehicle, too. These companies also make aftermarket parts like a barn door latch. Also called a barn door kit, it makes the doors on the back of your E-150 work like barn doors do.
