Volvo S80 Locks and Hardware

Wear and tear is a normal part of any vehicles functionality. Locks and their associated hardware are components that may sometimes require repair, and the difference between repairing it yourself and taking it to a professional can save you hundreds of dollars.

Can you fix your own locks?

Lock replacement and repair on a Volvo s80 is rated as safe and manageable for the amateur. Lock repairs will almost always require you to remove a door panel, so the largest risk is in damaging insulation. The mechanisms themselves are straightforward and can typically be replaced without the need for specialty tools.

What does an actuator do?

The actuator is the part inside the door that moves the lock up and down. If the locks in your s80 fail to work correctly, this is one of the most likely culprits. In vehicles, actuators usually come in two varieties.

  • Electrical: Electrical actuators manage automatic locks. They require power to work and are a little more complicated than manual-lock actuators.
  • Mechanical: Mechanical actuators are employed in manual locks. They engage when the locks slide from open to locked or vice versa.
How do you reset the service message after installing hardware?

The process can be done in a matter of seconds by following a few steps.

  1. Insert the key, but do not turn it to "on" yet.
  2. Locate the odometer reset button. Press and hold it.
  3. Turn the key to "on." This is the position that lets things run but does not start the engine.
  4. Wait for the service light to flash. At this point you can release the reset button
  5. Turn the key to "off." The reset should be done, but you can confirm it by starting the car.
Why arent the locks working?

There are five common causes of lock failure in automatic locks.

  • Key battery: If the battery on the key is dead or dying, it will fail to send a signal to lock or unlock the doors. Check it by replacing the battery or using the interior lock button to see if the problem persists.
  • Key signal: If the key remote is faulty, it will fail to send the signal even with a new battery.
  • Blown fuse: You can check your manual to see which fuse or fuses control the locking mechanisms. Fuse replacements are low-cost and fast.
  • Solenoid: This controls the electricity to move your locks.
  • Faulty wiring: If a wire goes, it can prevent the signal from reaching the locking mechanism or deny power to the system.
