Taillights for Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback has seen much iteration since it was first introduced in 1994. One part of the Subaru that stayed fairly consistent in design and make is the Outbacks taillights. One light perches on either side of the rear of the Subaru with a red cup to enhance the light emitted from the lamp as you drive.

What are the Outback taillight types?

There are a number of taillight options for the Outback. Consider the following choices for your Subaru.

  • Fiber optic taillights: These lights are usually made from densely packed strings of small LEDs. The designs of fiber optic taillights are usually more unique than other types, as they can be molded into shapes other taillights cannot.
  • Mini bulb taillights: The most common option for most Subaru Outback models and their respective trims, including Premium and Limited trims, is the mini bulb. This is similar to a regular, non-fluorescent light bulb in that it emits full spectrums of light, but at a higher power. This light is then reflected within the cup of the rear headlamp, amplifying it to visible levels.
  • LED taillights: A common option is the LED light. There are many types of these energy-efficient taillights to choose from and LED lights will last far longer than regular incandescent bulbs.
  • Tailgate light bars: If your vehicle model has a long strip of red rear lights, then you may need a tailgate light bar. This bar sits above the standard rear lights, emitting red when the brake is pressed. These are usually made from long strips of bright LEDs.
How do you select taillights?

To know what to purchase for your Subaru Outback SUV or station wagon, there are a few things you should check.

  • Find your Subaru Outbacks exact year, model, and trim. Getting these pieces of information is imperative for finding a taillight that will fit your vehicle.
  • Choose the style you want for your car. LED lights will last a long time, fiber optic lights have interesting designs, and mini bulbs produce a pleasing light frequency spectrum.
How do you install taillight bulbs?

If your Subaru Outbacks taillight bulb has burned out, you can follow a few simple steps to install a new bulb. This pertains specifically to Subaru vehicles with mini bulbs and bulb-based lights, as Outback LED lights take more care to install.

  1. Access the mount for the taillight. This is usually located in the very back of the Subaru Outbacks trunk, between the lining and the edge of the body.
  2. Gently pull out the mount and remove the wiring harness in order to access the bulb.
  3. Disconnect the old bulb from its socket using the two clamps holding the lamp in.
  4. Attach the new bulb using the reverse process of the step above, clamping it into the socket.
  5. Attach the wiring harness and mount securely.
