An ascot is a form of neckwear for men. It is typically shorter and wider than the modern necktie, and it is symmetrical from end to end. The ascot is often worn more loosely about the throat than a modern tie.
What materials are usually used for ascots?
The ascot is most often made of silk. It may be a solid color or a pattern. Stripes, paisley prints, and any other small, tasteful patterns are popular for these accessories because they match well with a variety of suit and shirt combinations.
What do you wear an ascot with?
There are a couple of different ways you can go with this neckwear.
- For a formal occasion: In modern life, this is usually a wedding. A groom and groomsmen may pair ascots with morning coats or cutaways as part of their wedding attire. A wedding guest could also choose one of these scarves instead of a black bow tie for an upscale event. The dressed-up version is worn higher on the throat. It shows prominently and is often adorned with a stick pin below the knot.
- As day wear with a blazer or sport coat: A silk ascot is a stylish substitute for a necktie. In this context, the scarves should be worn so that they show just above the collar, and they should not be tied in a tight knot. Some men like to unbutton the top of their shirt and let more of the scarf show in the front. Other men like to button the shirt and let the neckwear be an understated accent.
- In casual, but dressed, settings: An ascot can also be appropriate with a dress shirt and cardigan or with a classic silk smoking jacket. This style is best reserved when the gentleman is receiving guests at home or is socializing privately with acquaintances.
Is an ascot considered formal?
An ascot can be quite courtly fashion under the right circumstances. It is considered day wear, so it would not be appropriate for a black tie or white tie occasion in the evening. It is very much in style during the day when worn with correspondingly dressy attire.
How do you tie an ascot?
1. Start with the silk tie draped around your neck. One side should be significantly longer than the other.
2. Wrap the long side around the short side twice.
3. Push the long end up between your neck and the ascot as if you were tying a necktie.
4. Pull the longer end down loosely over and in front of the shorter end. This should form a loose, soft knot. The short tail should be completely concealed.
5. Anchor the two layers together with a stick pin. The pin should be placed high enough to be visible. This pin is typically decorative and not just utilitarian.
