Chrysler PT Cruiser Tailgates and Liftgates

The Chrysler PT Cruiser is a compact SUV model with a five-door hatchback design. The hatch, also known as the tailgate or liftgate, makes these vehicles functional and family friendly. The tailgate is the hinged door at the back of the vehicle. When it is open, it allows drivers to load and unload the trunk with ease. Chrysler drivers can unlock their tailgate via the remote keyless entry button and the power door lock switches. It can also be opened manually via the tailgate release touch pad found on the tailgate handle. When the vehicles tailgate is open, it is supported by gas props. The gas props are filled with inert gas, which gives these support parts the spring force they need to support heavy tailgates. To prevent tailgates from popping open too fast, the spring force is dampened by mineral oil. The gas and the mineral oil is contained securely in the props thanks to seals, but when these seals get damaged and leaks occur, tailgate motion is impacted.

If the props are the problem, PT Cruiser owners can select Chrysler-made or aftermarket replacement options. When drivers choose aftermarket car parts, the props may be called lift struts or lift supports. PT Cruiser owners may also need mounting adapters to install these new parts.

A new pair of gas props is the most common fix to tailgate issues, but tailgates that fail to stay open is not the only problem faced by PT Cruiser owners. The following parts may need to be replaced:

• Bolts: Tailgate props are held in place by bolts and washers. When these break, the tailgate will no longer function.
• Trim: After a fender bender, Chrysler PT Cruiser owners may need to replace damaged tailgate trim. While the trim isnt the most crucial component, it does help to seal the tailgate door, offering extra protection to the cargo.
• Handle and lock assembly: If the handle or lock assembly is broken, its usually caused by a faulty lock cylinder. Replacement handles and lock assemblies can be installed on the Cruiser for optimal locking performance.
