When you cool computer components, you keep them running longer and performing better. The confined space of computer cases means that high temperatures build up fast, which is not safe for any of the equipment inside. It might be surprising that there are cooling options for many individual parts, but RAM fans are specially designed coolers for the system memory sticks at the heart of your setup.

What do these products cool?

RAM is not the same type of memory used for storage. System memory interfaces with the processing CPU and provides a place for active programs to keep their data accessible to the CPU at high speeds. Can excessively high temperatures actually damage RAM?

As with any computer component, too much heat can cause damage. Both Intel and AMD processors are made to withstand high temperatures and are already connected to their own CPU cooler. The temperature of these CPUs can often go as high as 80 degrees Celsius, which is 176 degrees Fahrenheit. System memory usually sits close to the processor but does not have more than a few fins to help dissipate heat. If the RAM is overclocked or if there is an excessive amount of high temperatures building up in the computer, the built-in cooling fins will not do the job.

RAM fan units bring cooling directly to the system memory. Like a CPU cooler that is directly connected to the CPU, these items are custom fit for a variety of RAM shapes and sizes. They consist of the following:

  • Heatsinks: These pull the heat off of the memory chips.
  • Fans: Fans blow the hot air away from the RAM.
  • Blower motors: The blower motors power the fans.

This configuration of heatsink, fan, and blower is known as air cooling. Many CPU coolers utilize air cooling. This method blows air across a heat sink in order to allow it to cool the component it is in contact with. There are many different RAM configurations available.
