SO-DIMM PC2700 (DDR-333) Single Module RAM: The 2002 Standard

In 2002, PC2100 DDR memory was officially supported by many chipset manufacturers and thus paved the way for the development of succeeding module designs, such as the PC2700 RAM. Memory technology is a constantly evolving and improving area of consumer electronics, and PC2700 DDR RAM is merely one of the stepping stones for the technology.

What Is SO-DIMM PC2700 RAM?

  • Memory: Random access memory or RAM is a crucial component of your computer system. It is necessary for the laptop to even boot in the first place, and during operation, this memory provides a bridge between the performance gap created between the fast processor and the much slower data storage device. Desktop memory and laptop memory work the same way but are designed differently and use different sockets. You can find 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB variants of RAM sticks, and they vary widely in clock speeds measured in MHz.
  • SO-DIMM: There are two mainstream designs for RAM: DIMM and SO-DIMM. SO-DIMM is a physical design that promotes slimness and compactness which are important design elements in laptops and small desktops.
  • PC2700: This is the industry name for this type of DDR stick. DDR stands for double data rate and is capable of performing two data read and write operations in one clock cycle. "PC" indicates the type of DDR standard used, and 2700 relates to the name of the stick. DDR-333 states the type of DDR standard and then the MHz clock speed of the RAM, which is 333 MHz. Adding more RAM does not increase MHz, but it does increase the capacity stated in GB. This type of RAM maxes out at 1 GB per memory stick.

How Do I Install My SO-DIMM PC2700 RAM?

  • Desktop systems can still use SO-DIMM RAM but require an adapter for the SO-DIMMs to fit into the motherboards DIMM slots. Remove the side panel of the computer case to access the internals. The DIMM slots should be located near the CPU socket. Place the SO-DIMM modules into the adapter, and insert the assembly into the DIMM slots while ensuring that the plastic side clips latch properly on the notches at the side of the DIMM adapter.
  • Installing RAM on the laptop is a fairly simple process. Remove the back plate from your machine and inspect the memory banks. Take out the old SO-DIMM modules by unfastening the metal side clips that hold the stick down; it should cause the stick to protrude upward. If your laptop is dual channel but has only one 512 MB module, you can add another 512 MB to double your memory or upgrade to two 1 GB sticks to significantly increase your computer memory.
