Record Professional Digital Video with the Sony NX Camcorder

The Sony NX is a line of handheld digital AVCHD camcorders. Whether you are a professional filmmaker or merely an enthusiast, the Sony NX can capture high-definition video with professional-grade sharpness, clarity, and image quality.

What is AVCHD?

Advanced video coding high definition (AVCHD) is a digital video format that enables the recording and playback of HD video. One of the most important functions of a digital coding format is to translate the video signal into a digital file and then save it onto a camera's internal or external digital storage device. The size, or bits, of this file is compressed by an algorithm, thus minimizing the resources required to store or transfer it. The compression process can be either lossy or lossless. Lossless compression means that the algorithm will attempt to maintain the same basic image quality by only eliminating data redundancies and other unimportant information. Lossy compression may reduce the quality of the video by eliminating important information. This is often done when storage space is a concern.

AVCHD uses a video compression method known as MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. For audio data, it uses Dolby Digital AC-3 compression or uncompressed linear PCM audio. AVCHD is capable of recording footage at a high-definition resolution of 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K. For standard-definition video, the Sony NX camcorders use the MPEG2 format instead of AVCHD.

What are some features of the NX camcorders?

The precise specifications may vary based on the model but, in general, Sony NX camcorders are equipped with the following features:

  • A wide-angle Sony G-lens with optical zoom
  • An Exmor CMOS sensor
  • A 16:9 LCD monitor
  • A viewfinder
  • A built-in GPS system with geo-tagging
  • Wi-Fi wireless connectivity
  • A rechargeable lithium-ion battery

The aspherical G-lens in the NX camcorder is designed to capture your intended subject with granular details and discernible textures. It also provides a more precise and smooth bokeh blurring effect in the out-of-focus part of the image. The lens is equipped with actuator technology, which offers fast and precise focus in both manual and auto modes. The Exmor CMOS sensor is designed to reduce the noise of the video and increase the amount of light captured by the camcorder. The camcorder is resistant to dust and moisture that can interfere with the operations of the lens and the other internal components.

What type of storage format do NX camcorders use?

Sony NX camcorders have one, possibly two, media card slots that support Sony Memory Stick Pro memory cards, SD memory cards, or a combination of both. Select models may internal flash storage as well. SD cards are the more commonly used standard. They can be read by almost all modern card readers. Memory Stick Pro is a proprietary format only used by certain Sony devices. If you need to transfer your footage to an editor immediately, then you can send the file through the Wi-Fi connection, assuming there's a local access point.
