Ford Escort Taillights

Safe stopping in your Ford Escort requires properly working taillights. Here is a look at some of the things to consider when choosing taillights for your car.

What are the Escort taillight types?

There are many different options available for your Ford Escorts taillights, whether you want the same look as the original or you want to try something new.

  • Classic red: This is an exact replacement for your existing taillight. It has a deep red color to easily alert other motorists that you are slowing down.
  • Carbon/Blacked-out: This custom taillight replaces the original lens with a custom dark-colored lens. It also utilizes a matte black finish inside the taillight to create a tough look.
  • Smoke: This taillight utilizes a clear lens with individual red and white lights inside the unit. The areas surrounding the lights are silver, resulting in a rally-inspired look thats sure to turn heads.
  • LED strips: If youd like to augment your existing taillights, you can install red LED strip lights along the bottom of the trunk lid, the top of the rear window, or wherever else you think they might look good.
Who manufactures taillights for an Escort?

Your basic taillight replacement will be an Original Equipment Manufacturer, or OEM, unit produced or distributed by Ford. Of course, with all the custom units available, many aftermarket varieties made by various manufacturers exist as well. When it comes to the bulbs themselves, many different manufacturers provide generic bulbs that provide all the light you need. If youd prefer to go with an LED replacement, the only option is an aftermarket kit. Be sure to purchase all the components you need, as LED bulbs in vehicles require a diode cooling fan to be installed in addition to the bulb itself.

How do you replace a taillight?

For all the benefits it provides, replacing either your taillight bulb or the entire taillight fixture is quite easy. To replace the bulbs themselves, simply remove the socket from the fixture, remove the bulb from the socket, and replace the old bulb with the new as instructed below. If you need to replace the entire unit, here is how you do it.

  • Remove the two screws or bolts (depending on model year) holding the unit in place. These will be located to the left of the unit on the passengers side and the right of the unit on the drivers side.
  • Pull back your Ford Escorts trunk lining and find the two clips holding the taillight in place. Use pliers to remove these two clips to avoid breaking them.
  • Remove the taillight unit from the body of the vehicle and disconnect the electrical connection.
  • Install the new unit by connecting it to the electrical connection and reinstalling the pins.
  • Finally, reinstall the screws or bolts and test for proper operation.
